Where Did We Get the Idea of A Honeymoon?

Going on a honeymoon is the first real opportunity to spend time alone as man and wife, but how did this tradition come to be?

Where Did The Idea of Honeymoons Come From?

As all couples know, planning the perfect honeymoon is just as important as planning the wedding day itself. Traditionally the first vacation that you will take as a married couple (and presumably when the couple will consummate the union), a honeymoon has become the period of time where a couple can rest and recharge after going through the stress and excitement of the wedding ceremony. But why do we take these trips? The idea of a honeymoon originates far back in time, and did not originate as the vacation trip we take now.

There are many variations on the story of where the honeymoon began. As far as the word itself goes, the first regular usage in the English language can be dated back to the 16th century. Many stories of how honeymoons came to be report that the idea of a honeymoon started much earlier than that date, but it is hard to tell whether these are fact or fiction.

One idea that is repeated by most people is that the word “honeymoon” was used to describe an ancient Babylonian tradition where the father of the bride would give the groom all the mead (honey wine) he could drink for the first month (moon) of marriage. This was supposed to give the couple a boost to their fertility. While this idea is widely accepted as fact, since the word honeymoon was not used at this time (Babylon fell far before the 16th century), historians cannot be sure that this is where the custom and word honeymoon came from.

Another version comes from Norse beginnings. It is said to loosely be rooted in the word “hjunottsmanathr”. This is not a happy tradition, rather it was said to be necessary as many brides of the time were abducted from other tribes and the groom was required to hide his bride until her family stopped looking for her. Thus, the honeymoon was more of a kidnapping than anything else.

A third idea is that in Northern European cultures, a “moon” was representative of the monthly cycle of the body – and honey was said to represent how sweet the first one of these months was for a married couple. The word was a caution, that future “moons” in the marriage may not be as sweet as the honeymoon.

Although these ancient traditions don’t involve sweet candies, exclusive beaches, exotic foods and wines, and romantic resort suites, we believe in the twenty-first century that some of these things are must haves for every honeymoon couple. Just like everything else in the world, honeymoons have evolved a great deal to become the great romantic getaway of a lifetime in which they are known to be today.

No matter which tradition you choose to believe, one thing is clear: the honeymoon is here to stay. In current times, honeymoons rarely last a full month, and most couples are well aware that the sweet and calming romance of their first married month will have struggles and disputes in the future. Their content to enjoy their honeymoon and married life as it comes.

6 Proposal Ideas That Can't Be Refused

About to take your relationship to that next BIG level? Want to really surprise your loved one by NOT doing the average ‘get on one knee’ deal? Here are some creative yet romantic ways to not only prove your undying love, but also show your companion they’re worth going that extra mile:

1. Plan a treasure hunt. Set the clues in place and when he/she gets to the last clue, you will be standing there with both champagne and a proposal they can't refuse! Kapalua Villas in Maui, Hawaii is the perfect location for an adventurous couple! You can start with a morning game of golf. Plant your first love note or clue on the ninth-hole flag pole. From there she will be directed to go down the zip line in the beautiful forest to find her next clue. Once the adrenaline settles from 4,000 feet of zipline action, she’ll be dizzy with excitement when she finds the next note sends her to her own suite’s safe, where the ring awaits!

2. Make your own message in a bottle. Write a love poem on a piece of parchment paper, roll it into an antique bottle with a cork, and bury it in a well-marked spot in the sand. This surprise is definitely worth digging for! Although there are a lot of great beaches out there, you want this to be perfect and the Ponta dos Ganchos Luxury Resort in Brazil provides you with the ideal scenery and accommodations for this. Once the message is delivered, Ponta dos Ganchos offers a variety of exclusive beaches to hide away, disappear, and rediscover each other.

3. Want to create a moment where your lover will feel on top of the world? Take her to a romantic destination and propose at the top of a landmark skyscraper with the twinkling lights of the city below. These destinations can range from New York to Paris. But if you want to think outside the box, try a Castle in Prague or on the rooftop of the Banyan Tree Hotel in Bangkok.

4. Write "Will you marry me?" with a heart around it in the sand at the beach. Fill the heart with candles and rose petals. Just make sure the tide is going out and not coming in! This is a real life story from a client of ours Joe. He woke up early claiming to go on an early morning jog but instead had the hotel in San Diego, California assist in smoothing out the sand and writing his message. He brought breakfast home and insisted she eat it in the fresh crisp air. When she drew back the blinds to the balcony her message was revealed!

5. Slip the ring on her finger while she's sleeping and wake her with champagne and strawberries. At first, the gesture will simply seem romantic -- the real surprise comes when she notices her new piece of jewelry. Any hotel will do but why not make her feel like a celebrity? Take her to the Sunset Marquis in Hollywood where even among the fast-paced city life of L.A., you can completely relax and indulge in your new beginning.

6. Take a wine tasting tour in Tuscany, Italy where you can stimulate your taste-buds. At the end of the tour, when you purchase a bottle, she will be given a special bottle. She'll be drunk with happiness when she reads the hand-made label (that you made) on one of the bottles that says, "Will you marry me?" This will take a little bit of planning. Make sure you call ahead and arrange the label.

Spice Up Your Valentine's Day with These Foods!

The way to your lover's heart is through the stomach!
Most people just do the whole champagne and chocolate covered strawberries thing but here are some foods that have an aphrodisiac effect to spice up your Valentine's Day!

Chocolate: This is the obvious choice because it has been known as a romantic food item. IT contains the same chemical released by the brain when people fall in love.

Ice Cream: What's more romantic than lovers spoon-feeding each other ice cream in bed? Just the scent of vanilla will bring romance to the room.

Coffee: Just the smell of coffee can awaken your senses. Drink some with your loved one to create a love buzz.

Nuts: Almonds and walnuts have been a symbol of fertility. In Ancient Rome they used walnuts to throw at wedding ceremonies instead of rice.

Hummus: Put a Mediterranean twist on Valentine's Day and dip bits of pita bread in hummus. The main ingredient, chickpeas, are known to have been an aphrodisiac even in ancient times.

Prunes: Surprising, though it may be, prunes are considered an aphrodisiac. Drink some of this love potion with your sweetheart.

Seafood: Not only are the oysters an aphrodisiac but other kinds of seafood can stir up the same feelings. For example, shrimp and lobster could be very senusous as well.

Want to create a meal? Here are some romantic recipe ideas to show that special someone how much you love them.

Titillating Raspberry Coulis

Ingredients:
10 ounces frozen raspberries in syrup, thawed
1 tablespoon orange liqueur or orange juice
Juice of half a lime
1/2 cup frozen or fresh whole raspberries (thawed, if frozen)
Chocolate syrup
Sponge cake

Directions:
1. Place 10 ounces frozen raspberries, orange liqueur or juice, lime juice and fresh raspberries in a blender and puree.

2. Strain sauce through a fine-mesh sieve over a bowl. Smear some paspberry coulis (your fruit sauce) across two dessert plates. Drizzle with chocolate syrup.

3. Set a slice of sponge cake on each and artfully decorate with additional raspberry coulis and chocolate syrup.

4. Eat up!

Hot Pepper Pecans Appetizer

Hot and spicy nuts are the perfect pre-meal snack to make your mouth water for dinner and dessert.

Ingredients:
2 cups large pecan halves - raw from your local natural food store
1/4 cup (1/2 a stick) unsalted butter
1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
Several dashes hot pepper seasoning

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Melt butter in microwave. Spread pecans in shallow pan or rimmed cookie sheet. Pour melted butter over pecans and stir to coat.

2. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring several times. Be sure not to overcook. Cooking is all about tastes and smells; use your senses to tell you when they are done!

3. Remove from oven and sprinkle with soy sauce and hot pepper seasoning. Use a broad spatual to turn and coat pecans. Let cool in pan for 5 minutes. Finish cooling on double thickness of paper towels.

Make This Valentine's Day One to Remember

Tired of the same routine every Valentine’s Day? Whether you’ve been happily married for 15 years or this is your first Valentine’s together, we understand, it’s hard to do something other than dinner and a movie with Roses at the door for Valentine’s Day. However, just because it’s hard, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t or can’t be done. It MUST be done. Here are some great ideas that can take you off the beaten path of sweet romantic cards and a tasty steak dinner:

Find a unique town or spot a couple hours away. Make sure no one knows you there, and you know no one there. If everyone is a stranger, it’s much easier to be cheesy with your googlely eyes in public. Plan to stay at a bed and breakfast or a local inn. This is something close, convenient, and inexpensive; but you’ll feel like you’re a million miles away if you’ve never been there before. Call ahead and ask for any favors you wish. We suggest chocolate covered strawberries waiting on the desk, or mailing a love note and having it put on the pillow when you arrive. You might even want to ask that the television be removed from the room if one comes in the room. (You want no chance of distractions for this night!) Warm up with a bubble bath together, no need for a crowded hot tub. Go antiquing, hiking, or take a bike ride. The activities don’t necessarily matter, only that you are together and having alone quiet time. Click Here to find the perfect hotel.

If you’re an active couple go outside! Hike, walk, play, find away to relate romance to your favorite activities. Plant the roses or even the entire rose bush in the garden! If you have a body of water near you, take a boat out and just sit together. Watch the sunset, eat a picnic style meal, bring dessert, have an intimate moment our on the water. Any time you’re away from home, it can be a mini vacation. Step outside, enjoy the day, and make the wait to get home worth it!

Barrels of fun? Make your partner giggle! Maybe the cutesy romance isn’t quite your style. Go to a comedy club or a concert in the park. If you don’t get to spend time together to take advantage of all the things your city has to offer, now is the time! There’s no time like the present and not better present than a Valentine’s Day adventure! Clubs, bars, and parks may not sound romantic, but your actions and words definitely can be. Make the entire night about the other person. The more you show you care the more he or she will be floored. Try to plan more than one activity to prolong the night and spike curiosity. Once the surprise and excitement settle down, you can go home and watch a movie you’ve rented in the candlelight.

If you feel like you’re too busy for an entire day away from the desk, first, you’re wrong, second, we have suggestions for you!

Come home early, every minute counts, don’t waste a minute arguing about the time and plans, spend it all in passionate kisses. If you get home first spell our “I love you” on the garage, sidewalk, front of the house, anywhere that fits your life. If you live by the beach, write it in the sand. If you live with snow for four or more months each year, then write it in the snow. The key is to be big and over the top, you want to make it the talk of the town. Whatever you have planned after an entrance like that has got to be fabulous!

In the morning before you leave for work, leave hidden notes around the house. Make a little game out of things you have planned for your partner to do. Things like go to the spa, meet me for lunch, buy yourself something sexy for tonight. We want you to be very specific. The more it seems like you’re in control the more time and effort your partner will think you’ve put into this little project.

Go in late. OK, we all have to work, but all day? No. Get up the same time, even do your same routine, but cook, or have delivered, a wonderful breakfast. Bring it to your loved one, and feed him or her. Yes, the entire meal. If you can be spontaneous and go into work a couple hours late, then you surely know what you’re doing for the evening, or so they think!

OK everyone does little games. We’ve all made, “I’ll do the dishes tonight” passes or “Free massage” cards, etc. But spice it up a little! Give your partner the intimate and sexy ones when your at dinner or in a public setting. Make the cards something you both can enjoy. If you have a girls or guys night card, how is that going to remind them of the love you possessed this special day? Instead we suggest things like “Margarita night!” or “Weekend getaway to _____”

Approach routine things, differently. Even if you don’t write it out, most couples have similar Valentine’s checklists. You do the same things, every year. Well you’re going to, or already have married this person. That speaks volumes about your relationship. If you’re going to do dinner, do it on the roof or in the park. If you exchange presents, exchange them in a different manner where the physical presents are not the focus, and the time spent together is the highlight. If you’re going to wear lingerie wear a completely different style. The adventure is really what matters. If you enter the bedroom in your grandmother’s slip, but with a ten surprises coming his way, the slip will be the greatest hit.

We've all had the fight with parking vehicles since we were 16: who's in who's spot, who parked too close to your side, you know your own personal tif's with parking. Instead of parking in your lover's spot this Valentine's, fill the garage with love. If you want to be simple you can fill you garage, or at least the other side, with balloons. Use the weighted sand bags to prevent attack when the garage door opens. If you want to get a little bit romantic, tie a note to the bottom of one or some of the balloons explaining how much your love means. If you want a present involved, tell him or her that there is a piece of jewelry in one of the balloons and they have to guess which one. (A ring could also be tied to the end of the balloon where the string begins.)

Hike the Ruins in Cambodia: This trip takes you to another world. Explore the 12th century ruins in Angkor Wat where you can see Hindu towers, temples, and sculptures. These ruins are located in the middle of the jungle in Cambodia. Hire a guide and check out this 60-squared mile ancient city.

Climb Mt. Fuji : Tokyo is the perfect place for a mix of urban excitement and Japanese culture. After exploring the city take a night hike to the summit of Mt. Fuji. If you take the Fujikyu bus to the 5th station on the mountain and start at midnight you'll get to the summit just in time to see the sunrise. This climb is not for the faint of heart.

Planning The Perfect Honeymoon

There are many different types and styles of honeymoons, so how do you choose the best fit for you and your partner. The key is deciding which options you want and what activities you can't wait to do, then planning the location around those activities is a breeze.

If you are a spontaneous, active, and energetic couple you might want to consider a honeymoon where you can discover something new. If you would rather have an active honeymoon with hikes up mountains instead of walks on the beach, this is probably up your ally. If you prefer water over land, choose a location where you can go snorkeling, surfing, or swimming. Cruises are great for this because you're constantly on the water and get to check out multiple beaches and sea life. However, if you prefer land, go on a long hike, romantic bike ride, or a tour of wild life. South Africa's Tintswalo Safari Lodge is a luxurious base where you can go out exploring the surrounding nature reserves. For the helicopter pilots at Nimmo Bay Resort on Vancouver Island, the top of a glacier is a fine place to drop you off for lunch before whisking you away to other natural landing pads.

If intimacy has more appeal than horseback riding try an intimate cruise. The smaller the ship, the fewer distractions and the more intimate the experience. If you still like nature, only prefer it more subtle and special, try a National Geographic-sponsored tour of the Galapagos Islands, during which you'll have the chance to glimpse the famous giant tortoises, search the waters for whales and dolphins, and snorkel with penguins. Or if luxury is your calling try Island hopping between the French Polynesian Leeward Islands aboard a 60-person yacht. Depart from Bora Bora and make stops at the islands of Taha'a, Huahine, and Raiatea during the six-night cruise before returning to Bora Bora. There is a cruise for everyone's needs, your job if to figure out what your dreams are and we'll make them come true.

If you have a passion for what enters your stomach, we suggest a wine and dine honeymoon. A growing appreciation for fine cuisine has put couples on the hunt for once-in-a-lifetime culinary experiences. Whether it's a restaurant with a 12-course tasting menu, a wine bar with a well-versed sommelier, or a market with the freshest local produce, take advantage of your honeymoon abroad by letting your appetite be your guide. We suggest a trip to France to enjoy the culinary epicenter that is Paris or Tequila tasting in Mexico, Wine tasting in Italy, or if you want to add some spice to the honeymoon make a stop in Barcelona. We suggest picking an ingredient and letting your senses decided on your location. You may even want to improve your own everyday fine cooking with couples' cooking classes.

Any of these three options have the potential of being the most perfect moments in your life and the best way to kick off a life long commitment to each other, however, if the honeymoon doesn't fit the couple, it also has the potential of being disastrous. Decided what kind of couple you are and what categories you fit into. Then let your activities choose the locations best for you.

Mfuwe Lodge, Zambia, Africa where the elephants roam freely in the hotel lobby

Have you considered going on an exotic honeymoon? If you wish to have an unforgettable encounter with nature on your special celebration, we suggest Zambia, Africa. The gorgeous, untouched look of South Luangwa National Park is perfect for such a treat. Mfuwe Lodge overlooks oxbow lagoon, giving you and your partner a magical glimpse of Africa as it is, unspoilt by modern tourist attractions and modern civilizations. To maintain the lodge's tranquil setting none of our rooms are equipped with televisions, radios or telephones, how-ever we are in contact with the outside world via email, telephone and fax services which are available at reception. The lodge is 3km from the main gate of the South Luangwa National Park, and just a 45 minute transfer from Mfuwe International Airport.

There are 18 thatched chalets, all of which overlook one of the lodge's two lagoons, which attract abundant game activity during the day and at night. You will be sure to see animals like hippo, elephant, buffalo, leopard and lion make their way to the lagoons to drink as the watch in surrounding areas dries out in the hot seasons. Take a day safari to see all the sites, or a romantic night safari to get the African feel. You will be with an experienced guide who can answer all your questions and point out things you might otherwise miss. You may even choose to take an exciting walking safari to view or track animals on foot with armed scout as protection. Mfuwe Lodge is one of the few places in the South Luangwa National Park that stays open during the Green Season. During this time the landscape in the valley changes into a lush green environment that attracts Wild Dogs as well as many species of migrating African and European birds.

If you would like study the unique Zambian animals and plants you will see while on safari, the hotel provides a reference library containing more than 300 wildlife books and videos. However, the most exciting and eccentric view you can get is in the base camp in the center of the resort. If you visit Mfuwe Lodge during late November you can view wild elephants roam right through the building and interact with the staff at the reception desk. This 10 elephant herd is wild so the resort insists that guests have something between them and the herd, even though the animals have never harmed anyone.

Why do these same 10 elephants return each year? Mfuwe Lodge happens to have been built next to a mango tree that one family of pachyderms have always visited when the fruit ripens. When they returned one year and found the luxury accommodation in the way, they simply walked through reception. ndy Hogg, 44, director at the Bushcamp Company that runs the Lodge, has lived in South Luangwa National Park since 1982. But in all his years of dealing with wild animals he has never seen such intimate interaction between man and beast. 'This is the only place in the world where elephants freely get so close to humans,' says the 44-year-old. 'The elephants start coming through base camp in late November of each year to eat the mangos from our trees. 'When they are ripe they come through and they stand about for four to six weeks coming back each day or second day to eat the mangos.'So we suggest if you're getting married in the fall, definitely check out Mfuwe Lodge. But make your reservations early because the resort fills up quickly because of the unique experience the elephants bring to the base camp, and the resort as a whole.
